Every year I have a terrible battle keeping my ferrets free from fleas, My hutches have been soaked with disinfectant, scorched with a blow torch, and sprayed with flea killer but they keep coming back. They play havoc with the ferrets condition. particularly when they are coming into season.
I have found that a combination of regular bedding change, regular treatment with spot on. I have found blow torching the hutch also helps to keep the critters down.
I wonder if using some "natural pesticide" plants in the bedding would help? I could send in some trimmings from the santolina (cotton lavender ) (http://usethatherb.com/santolina-herbs-dry-garden-repels-insects/) and cost-mary (http://www.herbcompanion.com/Herb-Profiles/Costmary.aspx) Those were just guesses. Found this site: http://fixfleas.com/plants-that-repel-fleas which lists some anti-flea plants. Sounds like I should send rosemary, sage, mint, bay, and tansy. I'll send them all and you can experiment!
ReplyDeleteThanks Celia. I will give it a go.
ReplyDeleteI have put Celia's concoction in the hutch so I will wait and see if it is effective.
